# Qpilot Random Generator for Unique Test Data | Pcloudy Docs

Last updated on : 29 Oct 2026

## Overview

Pcloudy has introduced a new feature, Random Data Generator in QPilot, to help testers automatically generate unique, non repeating test data with every test execution. By generating fresh values based on predefined patterns, it eliminates issues caused by stale or duplicate data, reduces test failures, and makes test automation more reliable.

### What it is?

An execution-time data generation engine that produces unique, non-repeating values on each run, following patterns you define (alphanumeric, numeric or alphabetic, at a set length). Instead of fixed text, the dataset saves a rule, such as "generate a 10-digit number". Each time a collection runs, fresh values are produced, which avoids failures like registering an email that already exists. Reference a column in your steps with `{{columnName}}`.

### What you can do

* Create rule-based datasets: Set up columns by choosing a type (Alphabetic, Numeric or Alphanumeric) and a length.
* Generate values at runtime: Every collection run produces new, unique values from the configured rules.
* Preview sample data: See an instant preview grid for the chosen types and lengths before saving. The preview shows example values only; real values are generated during execution.
* Manage columns: Add rule columns (with a live counter up to 50/50) or delete columns with the trash icon.
* Edit rules: Reopen the dataset in Edit mode with its columns, types, lengths and row count prefilled.

### Steps

1. Click on QStudio on the Dashboard
2. Click on Start Agent on Qpilot - Automation Agent
3. Cick on the Collections icon on the left panel and select Datasets
4. Click on Add New Dataset, this will open the Add Dataset window. Give your Dataset a name.
5. Click on Random Generator
6. Enter the Column name, the Type of data, Character Length and the number of Rows.
7. Click on Add Column button to add a new column and enter the details in the fields provided.
8. The data will get generated based on the entered information.
9. Once you have all the data, simply click on Add Dataset
10. You can go ahead and edit the dataset, by clicking on the edit button against the respective Dataset.

#### Collections and execution

* Collection iterations: Each row runs as an individual test iteration, with a distinct set of random values per row.
* Fresh values every run: Running the collection again produces completely new values.
* Usage tracking: The "Used In" column in the dataset list shows which collections reference the dataset.

Select the dataset from the Datasets dropdown on the test inside the collection:

View in the collection shows the stored rules (for example `{{gen:alpha:8}}`, `{{gen:num:10}}`, `{{gen:alnum:12}}`) rather than values, because values are generated at run time:

### Rules, limits and validations

| Rule | Behavior |
| ------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Rows | 1 to 10 rows for datasets and CSV imports with rules. Numeric input only |
| Columns | 1 to 50. Add Column is disabled at 50/50. |
| Generated Length | 1 to 50 characters per column; values outside the range clamp to 1 or 50 with a toast. |
| Dataset Name | Required, up to 50 characters. |
| Duplicate Names | Not allowed; blocked with an error toast. |
| Deletion Protection | A random dataset attached to or used in a collection cannot be deleted. |
